A 700 mile demonstration rally has produced results showing natural
gas is cheaper than alcohol and gasoline and also that it produces
fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Three identical vehicles traveled 712
miles in the circuit Rio-Itatiaia-Rio-B๚zios-Rio to compare the
performance of the three fuels. Experts evaluating the project say
that the operational costs of the natural gas vehicle were 61.05
reales ($US38.13) compared with 124.13 reales ($US77.53) for the
alcohol vehicle and 130.40 reales ($ 81.44) for the gasoline vehicle.
CO2 emissions were measured at 167 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per
kilometer for natural gas while gasoline and alcohol emitted 207 and
183 grams respectively.
